On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my principles for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
