British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he added. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
